Volition, or, Our Will

Studies in Genesis 1

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. (Genesis 1:26 ESV)

Man is conscious and rational, intellectually aware and able to understand truth. Man has a moral compass, knowing the difference between right and wrong. Combining these pieces of the image of God given with the will gives Man the ability to act in a manner consistent with his function and purpose. Just as God acted upon His determined will so Man is able to put his creative abilities into action and do that which he determines. This is another part of the image of God given Man.

God creates everything with a designed purpose and intellectually precise function. God’s works all have moral excellence and goodness. God acts according to His eternal being which includes perfect intelligence guided by justified and righteous morality.

Through each of the six days of creation, God worked, building a universe specifically designed to show His greatness to Man. We can know only what God has told us about the universe and Man’s place in creation. But, that He created the universe and built the environment of the Earth to sustain and encourage life to prosper, shows willful intent.

God made light. On the Earth, He separated the elements making an environment. He made water, rain, oceans, lakes and rivers. He made vegetation, grasses, trees and plants which needs light and water and an environment to grow. He made the Sun and Moon and determined the days and nights and seasons, showing the progression of time. He made sea creatures and the birds of the air. He made animals. Finally, he made Man.

Man is not an accident of nature.

Giving people a will means they have freedom to act according to the determination of their intelligence and guidance of their moral compass. With the image of God comes the freedom to exercise that image according to the purpose and function of the Great Designer.

Many great people have made deliberate statements about freedom, from Augustine to Peter Marshall. They all talk about doing what is right, not deciding to do that which is wrong. Freedom is not the ability to choose between what is right and what is wrong. Freedom is the predisposition to always choose what is right. We are free to fulfill the purpose and function for which we are designed. Divorcing our wills from our created purpose and function will never give more freedom. For those created by God there is no such thing as more freedom. Our actions are determined by what we think and our understanding of morality.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. (Genesis 1:26 ESV)

Creation is not haphazard or random, but detailed, complicated and purposeful. There are reasons why the term Intelligent Design is taking hold of the scientific and philosophical academic worlds. As we become more technologically advanced it becomes harder to ignore the evidence of intelligence behind the design of nature.

Considering the suggested age of the universe, the age of the Earth, the fossil record of the Earth and the huge variety of animal and plant life, the probability such diverse life occurring by mere chance is absurdly miniscule. All life arising from the primordial soup is close to impossible because of the presence of innumerable variations of DNA. Each life form has its own computer program, called DNA, written by an Intelligent Designer, not by random, uncontrolled mishaps of nature.

Man is intelligent. Intelligence is a marker of the image of God. Intelligence is the ability to comprehend ideas or concepts perceived through observation of the immediate world and the ability to communicate those ideas and concepts to others. It is thinking, understanding, knowledge, comprehension of every facet of life encountered. Limited intelligence is found in the lower animals through instinct and learned behavior. However, the ability to comprehend and think through the ramifications of a new experience is not an ability given any other Earth-bound creature.

With intelligence comes the ability to ascertain truth and believe what the evidence suggests or advocates as truth. Since Man is not omniscient, but limited by space and time, we must examine the evidence of history or the past to determine what truly happened. We do not have all of the evidence. We do not have the option of manufacturing evidence. We do have the limitation of possibly misinterpreting the evidence until more evidence is discovered which may demand we change our understanding. Truth is not constrained by the evidence, changing with each person or each interpretation. Truth is never changed by perception.

Thus, Man is given the ability to know God intellectually though examination of himself and of Creation. Man also has the ability to understand and know that which God reveals about Himself. Given this ability means Man is designed, as part of the physical function and eternal essence, to discover more and more about the universe, the Earth, himself and the God who created everything.

Everything is Designed

Studies in Genesis 1

And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:9-10 ESV)

There is no life on the planet, yet. God is laying the foundation for life by preparing the planet to grow, encourage and sustain the life He will create in His time and by His design.

Everything He does has purpose and follows an intricate design. We usually work from incomplete ideas to blueprints and exact measurements, seeking to discover ahead of time the issues which may arise, making decisions to accommodate or overcome possible problems. For us, there are always unknowns. There are no unknowns in God’s design and accomplishments.

He took a planet covered in liquid hostile to life and created water which supports life. He created an atmosphere which could hold and distribute water to the land. He moved the geology of the planet, raising up mountains with canyons and valleys to channel water from them into the lower places. He lowered other places so the water would collect. In all of this He sets everything in motion, moving the planet, the atmosphere and the water in a purposefully designed direction.

He called the dry places “Earth” which means firm and land. He called the places He gathered the water “Seas” which means noisy (surf), river, basin or any large body of water.

Everything is designed.

Big Bang?

Studies in Genesis 1

In the beginning, God created the heavens. [Genesis 1:1 ESV]

Man (not men but people) try to explain the universe without acknowledging God’s existence, suggesting He is not who He is, is unknowable or non-existent. Yet, the evidence of the universe and its Intelligent Designer is visible and in some cases measurable. Within the last hundred years a theory of the origin of the universe has been suggested and has gained unprecedented popularity.

Since the first law of thermodynamics states all matter and energy remain constant within a closed system and our universe is a closed system, then matter and energy can neither be added nor subtracted from the sum total. Matter and energy moves and rearranges but does not increase or decrease in amount.

I am not a physicist and do not completely understand the consequences of this law. However, if this law is true, and it is accepted as a law, then the implications are astounding.

All matter and energy were initially contained within an infinitesimally small point of space. Existing for the briefest time and reaching an unimaginable temperature there was an explosion. Within seconds the infinitely large universe was born and has been expanding ever since. Observable astronomical data states galaxies are rapidly moving away from each other.

We are left with some simple yet non verifiable questions. From where did all matter and energy come? What was before? We are faced with unsolvable mysteries and can only speculate answers.

Only God can reveal the answers to these and other questions.
