Studies in Genesis 1
And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. (Genesis 1:11 ESV)
His planet is ready for the next phase of His plan.
He is the Creator of creation. He is the One who established the laws of the universe based upon His will and according to his eternal character. He has moved at His pace and according to His timetable. He transcends the universe and time, unconstrained by either, directing both. Nothing created exists outside of His will and apart from His purpose. He works.
Every time God speaks what He wants happens. “And God said” is not a suggestion or an observation. This is the fourth declaration of God concerning His creation and the second on this day. He first declared the waters be gathered into the lower places and that land appear. He has cultivated and prepared the planet for life. Now He declares life. Not all life but plant life.
He is specific in His declaration. He commands the earth “sprout vegetation.” To “sprout” means to bring up or forth, specifically, grass. Out of the cultivated, watered and enriched ground grass grows, carpeting the land, along with herbs and trees. Every plant, grass, flower, bush and tree springs up from the ground at His command.
There was no life in the land. God spoke and there was life in the land.
In the beginning, there was nothing. God only. God spoke and there was something.
God creates. It is part of His eternal character to create.
