Water and Life

Studies in Genesis 1

And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. (Genesis 1:6-7 ESV)

Water is essential for life, just as air and food are essential for life. A person may live for a month without food, four days to a week without water, minutes without air. No one can live even a moment without God. He is the source of all life and the One who sustains life. As God fashioned His creation, building the essentials from the raw material He first created, He put into place the laws which run the universe and life.

If I am correct in my thinking, everything God fashioned in creation is a physical representation of an eternal, spiritual reality. There is life in eternity just as there is life in the temporal universe. There are spiritual laws in eternity just as there are physical laws in the temporal universe. That which He created exists at his pleasure and for His purpose and according to His laws.

One of the first things God did in creation was fashion water. Looking ahead, Jesus tells the woman at the well that physical water must be continually consumed while spiritual water satisfies for eternity.

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14 ESV)

God’s purpose, especially those created in His image, is to give and sustain life.
