Light Separated From Darkness

Studies in Genesis 1

And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.(Genesis 1:4 ESV)

Before God said “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3 ESV) He tells us there was darkness. “And darkness was over the face of the deep” (Genesis 1:2 ESV). He uses the same word in both verses for “darkness” which is the absence of light. In the physical universe light is the energetic movement of matter, specifically photons travelling at incredible speed, blocked only by other dense matter.

All atoms move. Yet, dense matter looks like nothing is moving. God created the universe by first creating all matter. Then, He began to fashion existing matter into other things. Some scientists suggest all matter was initially compressed into a ball the size of a small marble, or smaller. Then this small marble exploded. Within three minutes the universe was formed. This is conjecture based upon observable evidence. God neither confirms nor denies the conclusions of the great minds regarding the beginning and continuing existence of the universe. God knows what He did.

We can extrapolate from the evidence the universe was dark before God created light. Matter existed and God formed the matter into various things according to the laws of the universe which included light. Where there is light there cannot be darkness. Notice God “separated the light from the darkness.” “Separated” means He divided and made a distinction between light and darkness.

He not only separates, divides and makes a distinction between physical light and darkness but also between spiritual light and spiritual darkness.
